Henry Strater’s Ogunquit

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art is excited to present Henry Strater’s Ogunquit opening on April 18, 2025, and running through November 16. This exhibition explores the artist’s deep relationship to Ogunquit and its surrounding environs.

Strater traveled to Maine for the first time in 1919. By then, Ogunquit was known nationally as a summer destination for artists to study, work, and recuperate in the stunning natural beauty of the town. Strater enrolled in Hamilton Easter Field’s School of Painting and Sculpture, where he quickly became a central figure in the vibrant arts community. He befriended artists not only involved in the vanguard circles around Field’s school, but among the more conservative, late-Impressionist painters who attended Charles Woodbury’s Ogunquit Summer School of Drawing and Painting on the other side of Perkin’s cover.

By surveying Strater’s work around Southern Maine, the exhibition will highlight his impassioned commitment to art, friendship, and nature that sparked a life-long relationship with Ogunquit.
