OMAA Names David Cunningham Executive Director

Ogunquit, Maine, February 24, 2026—The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) announces that current Interim Executive Director David Cunningham will become the Executive Director of the Museum beginning March 1, 2026. The news follows a unanimous decision by OMAA’s Board of Trustees, and the announcement earlier this month that former Executive Director Amanda Lahikainen will depart to lead the Concord Museum in Massachusetts.

Cunningham, who served as OMAA’s Director of Advancement from October 2023 until this month, brings decades of management experience in the corporate world to OMAA. The search for a new Director of Advancement is currently underway.

Says Cunningham, “I’m grateful to the Board, and I’m excited to work with our talented team to build on the strong foundation we have today. It’s a privilege to steward a museum with such a rich history, and one that is truly singular in the American museum landscape. OMAA’s identity is defined by ambitious exhibitions of modern and contemporary American art and an unmistakable sense of place on the Maine coast, perched on a rocky cliff above the Atlantic. There is simply nowhere else to engage with art of this caliber where the galleries and the sea remain in continuous conversation. The ocean isn’t just our backdrop; it changes how the work is experienced.”

Karyn Morin, President of OMAA’s Board of Trustees, adds, “Following a comprehensive internal evaluation and interview process, the Board determined that David’s experience, strategic insight, and commitment to the Museum make him the right choice to serve as Executive Director. His deep understanding of the Museum’s mission and his strong leadership will ensure continuity and stability as we prepare for the next chapter in OMAA’s future.”

Cunningham holds a BA in Art History and a BFA in Painting and Sculpture and combines a deep commitment to modern and contemporary art with proven business leadership to further OMAA’s growing reputation for excellence. Prior to joining OMAA, Cunningham spent 26 years at IMG—the worldwide leader in sports, fashion, and media events—where he rose to Senior Vice President and led global teams in strategic initiatives and talent and brand development. His leadership spans 30+ years across London, Paris, and New York City, shaping a collaborative, international perspective.

In 2026, the Ogunquit Museum presents one of its most pioneering years of programming to date, featuring the work of world-renowned artist Hank Willis Thomas alongside, for the first time, a selection of artists he has collaborated with, in response to America’s 250th anniversary. Looking for America highlights the power of creative communities, while asking the timely question: What does it mean to look for America, and whose America are we seeking?

Three additional special exhibitions, along with guest lectures by such renowned artists as Cara Romero, and a robust slate of programs, special events, and community collaborations, will make for a truly remarkable year ahead.
