Ogunquit Museum of American Art is proud to host a season-long installation of contemporary sculpture by the artist Gary Haven Smith in its sculpture gardens. Carving directly into granite boulders found near his home in New England, Smith seeks a balance in sculptural form between the stone’s natural shape and surface and the precise geometry, hard angles, and pierced forms of the contemporary moment. His work draws on textures, patterns and designs inspired by ancient civilizations with an aesthetic eye toward releasing the history of the earth stored within the rock. For Smith, the resulting works “are reflections on past cultures that continue to live for me.”
Gary Haven Smith is supported by individual contributors June LaCombe and Crandall K. Toothaker.
