Carl Austin Hyatt: SALT/SEA/STONE

Long Gallery
May 1-June 28, 2017

SALT / SEA / STONE is an exhibition of contemporary landscape photography by the artist Carl Austin Hyatt.  The exhibition features a selection of black and white photographs made using a large format view camera.  The masterfully printed images are rich in tonality and monumental in scale. Hyatt faithfully captures the subject in front of the camera, but the artist also advocates for a deeper sense of communion with the landscapes he photographs. With geologic processes on one side and man’s intervention on the other, Hyatt touches on the delicate and often poetic relationships between the two most powerful forces on earth. As we stand on the shifting grounds of epochal change – where human activity has moved more earth than all natural forces combined – the images presented here offer a respite for contemplation and meditation on the changing tides of the moment.

SALT / SEA / STONE is generously supported by Jamie LaFleur and The Banks Gallery.
