DESCRIPTION:Join us at OMAA during Art in Bloom on Saturday\, June 21\, from 3–4pm for a special floral design demonstration with Elaine DiGiovanni! \nA passionate\, award-winning designer\, Elaine has been a nationally accredited master flower show judge for more than 30 years with National Garden Clubs\, Inc. Additionally\, she is on the Florida Judges Council\, president of the Floralia 16 floral design group\, member of the Venice Florida Garden Club\, and chairman of the Piscataqua Garden Club. She has exhibited throughout New England and won prestigious awards such as the John Taylor Arms Award with a perfect score. \nElaine has lectured on floral design across New England and Florida for over 20 years and loves sharing her designs with others in the hopes that participants “catch the bug” and discover a passion for floral design in their own lives. SUMMARY:Landscape painting with Tessa Greene O'Brien
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 26\, 2pm-5pm\, (Rain Date: Friday\, June 27 from 2pm-5pm) \nWeather is the “x” factor in any landscape\, controlling light & shadows\, obscuring the view\, and creating drama or a heightened sense of clarity. What does warm summer air look like? How does fog land on trees? What color is an April rainstorm? Asking these questions of a painting can open up one’s approach to landscape painting\, making space for invention\, play\, and perception within the acts of direct observation & translation. In this 3-hour workshop\, the class will explore the Ogunquit Museum grounds as a group\, evaluating different sites for their merit as painting subject matter\, and using simple viewfinders to choose individual painting sites. Once situated\, participants will spend roughly 90 minutes painting independently\, with one-on-one guidance from the instructor. The final hour of the class will be spent together in a group “critique” of the new work. \nWhile this class is open to all levels\, participants should have some familiarity with their materials and be comfortable working outside. This class is free and open to the public and all materials will be provided. Registration required. The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) is proud to announce the launch of a new annual lecture series\, Distinctive Voices in American Art\, with its inaugural program headlined by David Breslin\, Leonard A. Lauder Curator in Charge of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nThe lecture titled “Who Cares About American Art?” will take place on Friday\, June 27\, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at OMAA. Breslin will reflect on the evolving role of American art in today’s cultural landscape\, drawing from his curatorial experiences at both The Met and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, where he previously served as the DeMartini Family Curator and Director of Curatorial Initiatives. \nIn his career\, Breslin has been a leading voice in how institutions engage with artists and audiences\, notably helping to establish the Whitney’s Indigenous Artists Working Group. His lecture will open a new platform at OMAA for critical dialogue around the purpose\, relevance\, and future of American art. \n“This new series underscores OMAA’s commitment to fostering fresh perspectives and dynamic conversation with leading figures in American art and art history\,” said Amanda Lahikainen\, Executive Director of OMAA. “We are honored to welcome David Breslin as the first speaker in this initiative that invites both reflection and imagination.” \nWe anticipate this lecture to be well attended. Drawing on OMAA’s history as the site of two significant art communities—where artists studied and interpreted the natural landscape to process contemporary world events—this class will explore how the micro (flora\, snippets of color) can help us make sense of the macro through en plein air painting.  \nThis class is free and open to the public and all materials will be provided. Max Capacity 15 Attendees.  \nCarly Glovinski makes work that explores the make-do\, resourceful attitudes associated with domestic craft and a reverence for nature and the great outdoors. She received her BFA from Boston University and is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York. She has had solo exhibitions at Mass MoCA\, North Adams\, MA and Colby Museum of Art\, Maine. This conversation will explore their artistic processes\, perspectives\, and interpretations of the Marginal Way as an iconic landmark in Ogunquit\, highlighting its significance in the visual and cultural landscape. We ask that you RSVP if you plan to attend this talk–the event is nearing capacity. \nRSVP CLOSED: THIS EVENT HAS REACHED CAPACITY.\nArtist Bios: \nTom Glover studied at the University of New Hampshire and continued artistic mentorship with John Laurent. Encouraged to see the Great Masters firsthand\, he traveled widely across Europe and\nbeyond\, attending retreats and painting in places like the Isles of Shoals\, Block Island\, and Italy. Glover has taught at UNH and now teaches in Maine. He’s also an artist-in-residence\, a certified diver\, and works as a painting restorer and framer in New Hampshire. \nDon Gorvett\, a Boston-born artist\, moved to Ogunquit after high school and before attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. With over fifty years of experience\, he specializes in large reduction woodcuts depicting New England harbors and waterfronts\, particularly inspired by Ogunquit’s Marginal Way. His studio overlooks Gloucester Harbor\, and his gallery in Portsmouth\, New Hampshire\, is celebrating its nineteenth year. \nOriginally from Long Island\, Christopher Volpe is an artist\, writer\, and teacher working and living in New Hampshire. His paintings in tar and gold leaf reference mortality\, mysticism\, and concern for the fate of a world buying and spending its way toward uninhabitability. His work is collected internationally and held in the permanent collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum\, the Whistler House Museum\, Smith College\, Ege University (Turkey) and the University of New Hampshire. He is newly represented by Georges-Berges Gallery in New York City.

SUMMARY:Printmaking Process with Crystalle Lacouture
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION: Chases Garage in York\, ME \nJoin artist and printmaker Crystalle Lacouture for a one day workshop to learn general information about different printmaking techniques and how to identify prints. She will briefly describe intaglio (etching\, engraving)\, lithography\, silkscreen\, and woodcut (relief printmaking) methods using reference materials and prints. Using examples of her recent woodblock prints\, Lacouture will demonstrate the techniques in her own works of woodcut\, jigsaw\, and multiple block printmaking. Following this overview and demonstration\, participants will create their own single color relief prints! We will learn how to transfer a drawing to a block (it must be reversed)\, simple carving techniques\, ink and color mixing\, and printing methods that include using the Chase’s Garage etching press as well as a table top etching press. Each class member will leave with at least one relief print of their own making. \nThis class is free and open to the public and all materials will be provided–PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE AT CHASES GARAGE IN YORK. Max Capacity 15 Attendees.  \nverónica a. pèrez is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in the community\, exploring themes of erasure\, identity\, and interdependency through her personal work and their braiding circles workshops. pèrez graduated with their BFA from Moore College of Art and Design in 2014 and received their MFA from Maine College of Art in 2016. In 2023\, pèrez was awarded the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist award and the Amelia Peabody award for sculpture excellence. Recently\, she was named one of the Maine Artist Fellows for 2024 in fine arts by the Maine Arts Commission. pèrez currently works as the Administrative Assistant at the Black-led arts and residency organization\, Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland\, Maine. DESCRIPTION:Join us during spring break to learn about cyanotype with artist and educator\, Hannah Babcock! \nThis workshop is free\, open to the public\, and does not require registration. \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWorkshop description:\nIn this workshop\, we will learn about using the power of the sun to make images using cyanotype\nprintmaking! We will arrange stencils and use markers on top of transparent plates to create small\ncompositions that will block out UV light and will result in beautiful blue and white prints. \n  \nArtist Bio:\n\nHi! My name is Hannah and I’m an artist and art educator located in Portland\, Maine. I grew up\non the coast of Southern Maine and am so thrilled to be back after completing my Bachelors in\nStudio Art at Carleton College in Northfield\, Minnesota. I’m currently a graduate student and\nteacher candidate at Maine College of Art and Design. My practice is centered around the\nintersections of craft\, labor\, and sensitivity. I work primarily in sculptural installation and both\nwoodcut and intaglio printmaking. Process is so integral to the work I make\, and I hope to\nforeground the importance of process over product for my students.

DESCRIPTION:Heather Lewis – Landscape Drawing Class\nFriday\, June 5th\, 3 – 5pm \nThis workshop is a classic\, set in OMAA’s sculpture gardens with its breathtaking views of Maine’s iconic rocky cliffs and sea. Artist/teacher Heather Lewis will share her love of sketching in this location and offer her expertise on capturing what is seen in an outdoor setting\, while on the move. Workshop participants will receive admission to the museum with a docent-led tour of the permanent collection and learn about the historic Ogunquit Art communities. Suggested materials: lightweight\, easy carry tote: Sketchbook- 8×10\, or smaller multimedia\, or watercolor paper; graphite pencil\, charcoal\, pencil sharpener\, eraser; Variety of color media– watercolors (pan style set)\, 3 brushes- large\, medium\, and small ; pen\, crayons\, colored pencils\, water soluble colored pencils\, or pastels\, paint rags or paper towels. Suggestions for personal comfort: sunscreen\, bug spray\, sun hat\, water repellent windbreaker\, water bottle\, snacks.\n \nJune 5\nClick here to register.\n \nAll skill levels are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Cara Gonier – Advanced Technique in Gelatin Plate Monotype\nSaturday\, May 30\, 11am-3pm \nClass moved to Saturday\, June 20\, 11am-3pm \nThis workshop covers advanced techniques in gelatin plate monotype. We will explore paint chemistry\,  including why and how to layer specific colors to achieve painterly and atmospheric effects to create a collectable fine art landscape monotype. We will discuss printmaking tools and terms\, the importance of paper selection as well as care and maintenance of a gel plate. All will be discussed in a relaxed and fun environment suitable for the beginner or professional artist. (To reduce emission of VOC’s and encourage an allergy reduced environment\, NO solvents\, oil based paints\, rubbing alcohol or other materials that give off strong VOC’s will be used during this class).\n\n\nClass has reached capacity.\n\n\nAll are welcome\, no prior experience in gelatin plate printing necessary.  Materials will be provided on the day. Max Capacity 20 students.\n\nCARA GONIER is a New England based award winning painter and printmaker.  Her work is collected internationally and is featured in solo\, invitational\, museum and juried exhibitions her work was published in International Artist Magazine under the feature “Master Painters of the World”. Cara is the founder and executive director of Rolling River Printmakers of New England and shares her joy of printmaking thru her accessible traveling workshops\, teaching students and artists how to create collectible fine art monotypes with minimal equipment.
