DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 22\, 2pm \nverónica will be leading a hair braiding circle\, an intimate community gathering focused on braiding a three-strand braid while conversing about identity\, experience\, and belonging. The sculptures that emerge from these are all organic and engender the same feelings that the stories exude.  \n  \nThis class is free and open to the public and all materials will be provided. Max Capacity 15 Attendees.  \nverónica a. pèrez is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in the community\, exploring themes of erasure\, identity\, and interdependency through her personal work and their braiding circles workshops. pèrez graduated with their BFA from Moore College of Art and Design in 2014 and received their MFA from Maine College of Art in 2016. In 2023\, pèrez was awarded the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist award and the Amelia Peabody award for sculpture excellence. Recently\, she was named one of the Maine Artist Fellows for 2024 in fine arts by the Maine Arts Commission. pèrez currently works as the Administrative Assistant at the Black-led arts and residency organization\, Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland\, Maine. They are also a co-organizer at Tender Table\, an organization dedicated to uplifting Maine’s Black and Brown community through storytelling and food. \n \nClick Here to Register!

DESCRIPTION:Join us during spring break to learn about cyanotype with artist and educator\, Hannah Babcock! \nThis workshop is free\, open to the public\, and does not require registration. \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWorkshop description:\nIn this workshop\, we will learn about using the power of the sun to make images using cyanotype\nprintmaking! We will arrange stencils and use markers on top of transparent plates to create small\ncompositions that will block out UV light and will result in beautiful blue and white prints. \n  \nArtist Bio:\n\nHi! My name is Hannah and I’m an artist and art educator located in Portland\, Maine. I grew up\non the coast of Southern Maine and am so thrilled to be back after completing my Bachelors in\nStudio Art at Carleton College in Northfield\, Minnesota. I’m currently a graduate student and\nteacher candidate at Maine College of Art and Design. My practice is centered around the\nintersections of craft\, labor\, and sensitivity. I work primarily in sculptural installation and both\nwoodcut and intaglio printmaking. Process is so integral to the work I make\, and I hope to\nforeground the importance of process over product for my students.

DESCRIPTION:Heather Lewis – Landscape Drawing Class\nFriday\, June 5th\, 3 – 5pm \nThis workshop is a classic\, set in OMAA’s sculpture gardens with its breathtaking views of Maine’s iconic rocky cliffs and sea. Artist/teacher Heather Lewis will share her love of sketching in this location and offer her expertise on capturing what is seen in an outdoor setting\, while on the move. Workshop participants will receive admission to the museum with a docent-led tour of the permanent collection and learn about the historic Ogunquit Art communities. Suggested materials: lightweight\, easy carry tote: Sketchbook- 8×10\, or smaller multimedia\, or watercolor paper; graphite pencil\, charcoal\, pencil sharpener\, eraser; Variety of color media– watercolors (pan style set)\, 3 brushes- large\, medium\, and small ; pen\, crayons\, colored pencils\, water soluble colored pencils\, or pastels\, paint rags or paper towels. Suggestions for personal comfort: sunscreen\, bug spray\, sun hat\, water repellent windbreaker\, water bottle\, snacks.\n \nJune 5\nClick here to register.\n \nAll skill levels are welcome. Students will need to bring their own materials.\n \nHEATHER LEWIS possesses a life-long immersion in the arts beginning in Delaware with artist parents\, fine art training at The Philadelphia College of Art\, and over three decades of actively creating art for exhibition and sale. PASSIONATE about helping others reconnect with their own creativity\, she is a seasoned studio arts instructor and creativity coach who inspires learning through her engaging and encouraging teaching style. She has taught and conducted workshops throughout the northeast for all different age levels from pre-school to college. She is an adjunct studio arts professor at York County Community College. SUMMARY:CLASS FILLED - Cara Gonier - Advanced Technique in Gelatin Plate Monotype
DESCRIPTION:Cara Gonier – Advanced Technique in Gelatin Plate Monotype\nSaturday\, May 30\, 11am-3pm \nClass moved to Saturday\, June 20\, 11am-3pm \nThis workshop covers advanced techniques in gelatin plate monotype. We will explore paint chemistry\,  including why and how to layer specific colors to achieve painterly and atmospheric effects to create a collectable fine art landscape monotype. We will discuss printmaking tools and terms\, the importance of paper selection as well as care and maintenance of a gel plate. All will be discussed in a relaxed and fun environment suitable for the beginner or professional artist. (To reduce emission of VOC’s and encourage an allergy reduced environment\, NO solvents\, oil based paints\, rubbing alcohol or other materials that give off strong VOC’s will be used during this class).\n\n\nClass has reached capacity.\n\n\nAll are welcome\, no prior experience in gelatin plate printing necessary.  Materials will be provided on the day. Max Capacity 20 students.\n\nCARA GONIER is a New England based award winning painter and printmaker.  Her work is collected internationally and is featured in solo\, invitational\, museum and juried exhibitions her work was published in International Artist Magazine under the feature “Master Painters of the World”. Cara is the founder and executive director of Rolling River Printmakers of New England and shares her joy of printmaking thru her accessible traveling workshops\, teaching students and artists how to create collectible fine art monotypes with minimal equipment.

DESCRIPTION:Cara Romero  \n\nMonday\, June 22nd\, 3:00-5:00 PM at Leavitt Theatre\n\nJoin us at the historic Leavitt Theatre for a lecture by artist Cara Romero. \nCara Romero is an enrolled citizen of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe\, a visual storyteller\, activist\, and mother. She is known for dramatic fine art photography that examines Indigenous life in contemporary contexts. With extensive training in photography\, her work is shaped by 25 years of formal study and artistic practice. Blurring the lines between fine art and activism\, Romero tells stories of cultural memory\, collective histories\, and autobiography to convey the complex realities of contemporary Native peoples. Her work has been acquired by major institutions including The Met\, The MoMA\, The Amon Carter\, as well as the Forge Project Collection. She has been commissioned to create monumental-scale public art including the 2019 Desert X Biennial and NDN Collective’s #TONGVALAND billboard series in Los Angeles. Artist/teacher Heather Lewis will share her love of sketching in this location and offer her expertise on capturing what is seen in an outdoor setting\, while on the move. Workshop participants will receive admission to the museum with a docent-led tour of the permanent collection and learn about the historic Ogunquit Art communities. Suggested materials: lightweight\, easy carry tote: Sketchbook- 8×10\, or smaller multimedia\, or watercolor paper; graphite pencil\, charcoal\, pencil sharpener\, eraser; Variety of color media– watercolors (pan style set)\, 3 brushes- large\, medium\, and small ; pen\, crayons\, colored pencils\, water soluble colored pencils\, or pastels\, paint rags or paper towels. PASSIONATE about helping others reconnect with their own creativity\, she is a seasoned studio arts instructor and creativity coach who inspires learning through her engaging and encouraging teaching style. She has taught and conducted workshops throughout the northeast for all different age levels from pre-school to college. She is an adjunct studio arts professor at York County Community College. Jenny’s most recent series of trophies existed in an imaginary world in which rabbits give each other awards—Head Cabbage\, Top Carrot\, #1 Bun\, and Crown Jewel—trophies in which everyone (or every bun) is a winner. Come make an award for a loved one\, a show of gratitude for some delicious vegetables\, a thank you to your favorite spot in Maine\, a note to self\, or even a good-enough Nice Try. We’ll be making whimsical trophies for all—objects\, places\, people\, moments—congratulating them for whatever it is they do. Pieces will be fired by Chases’ Garage and available for pick-up within 2 weeks after the class.\n\n\n\nThis class is full. DESCRIPTION:Ashley Page – Papermaking Workshop\nFriday\, August 7\, 11am – 2pm \nJoin Portland based artist Ashley Page in this hands-on papermaking workshop! Focused on the beauty of botanicals\, attendees will learn basic sheet forming and incorporate fresh and dried plant material within the papers. Participants can create floral compositions within their pages using embedding or use plants as inclusions in their papers\, creating beautiful\, unexpected papers. Once dried\, these papers can be framed\, collaged\, written\, painted or drawn upon. This is a beginner class that has plenty of space for experimenting and intuitive making! No prior papermaking experience is required\, and participants will be guided through each step of the process. Something to consider: Papermaking is a wet process; participants should be prepared with waterproof or water-safe shoes and clothing. Suggested Materials to bring (This is totally optional\, but helpful for attendees): Plant matter from your personal gardens\, floral arrangements\, foraging etc; Botanical related imagery or collage material; A personal pair of tweezers; Waterproof apron (or clothes you’re okay with being wet); Waterproof shoes (or shoes that are okay with getting water on them); Sketchbook + mark making tools.\n \n\n\n\nClick here to register.\n\n\n\n \n\nAll are welcome\, no prior experience in papermaking necessary.\n\n \nASHLEY PAGE is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Portland\, ME. Page’s artwork has been exhibited at museums and institutions\, including the Portland Museum of Art\, Hunterdon Art Museum\, the Tate House Museum\, and the University of Southern Maine Art Gallery. As a teaching artist\, she has taught various workshops in textiles\, papermaking\, and printmaking at Peters Valley School of Craft\, the University of Maine Orono\, Waterfall Arts\, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens\, among others. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Permanent Collection Lecture with Dr. Devon Zimmerman\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. This event will take place at the Museum on September 16\, 5pm\, and is free and open to the public. We welcome you to arrive at 5 pm to find your seats and enjoy the galleries; the presentation will begin at 5:30 pm.  \nDr. Zimmerman will lead OMAA’s second annual Permanent Collection Lecture\, focusing on the Museum’s recent Alexander Calder acquisition\, El Ojo Que Sueño. The lecture will place Calder’s mobile in dialogue with other works in OMAA’s permanent collection\, which has long traced the evolution of American modernism through artists connected to Ogunquit and beyond. El Ojo Que Sueño expands this narrative and highlights the international networks that shaped American art in the twentieth century. \nDr. Devon Zimmerman is Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art\, where his research focuses on the transatlantic networks that shaped modernism in art and design. Previously\, he held positions at the Museum of Modern Art\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum\, and had curated exhibitions including Deconstructing Power: W.E.B. Du Bois at the 1900 World’s Fair\, Lee Krasner: Geometries of Expression\, and Nicole Wittenberg: A Sailboat in the Moonlight.  \nClick here to reserve your free tickets.
