This event will take place at the Museum and is free and open to the public. We welcome you to arrive at 5 pm to find your seats and enjoy the galleries; the presentation will begin at 5:30 pm.  \nConstructing The Maine Idea: Nativism\, Modernism\, and the Fascist Aesthetic in Interwar Maine\nThis talk will explore the complex nexus of regionalism\, fascism\, tourism\, authenticity\, and racialization that characterized the depiction of Maine and its people in both high and low sources of modern interwar visual culture ranging from the work of Marsden Hartley and Marguerite Zorach to tourist brochures and postcards. \nGordon Wilkins is the Robert M. Walker Curator of American Art at the Addison Gallery of American Art\, Phillips Academy\, Andover\, MA. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Permanent Collection Lecture with Dr. Devon Zimmerman\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. This event will take place at the Museum on September 16\, 5pm\, and is free and open to the public. We welcome you to arrive at 5 pm to find your seats and enjoy the galleries; the presentation will begin at 5:30 pm.  \nDr. Zimmerman will lead OMAA’s second annual Permanent Collection Lecture\, focusing on the Museum’s recent Alexander Calder acquisition\, El Ojo Que Sueño. The lecture will place Calder’s mobile in dialogue with other works in OMAA’s permanent collection\, which has long traced the evolution of American modernism through artists connected to Ogunquit and beyond. El Ojo Que Sueño expands this narrative and highlights the international networks that shaped American art in the twentieth century. \nDr. Devon Zimmerman is Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art\, where his research focuses on the transatlantic networks that shaped modernism in art and design. Previously\, he held positions at the Museum of Modern Art\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum\, and had curated exhibitions including Deconstructing Power: W.E.B. DESCRIPTION:Shane Charles – Site-based activation\nThursday\, September 17\, 3pm – 5pm \nA site-based activation within an engineered sculptural system built from timber\, oxidized steel\, and machined joinery. Breath\, moisture\, and pressure operate as material methods: contact transfers residue\, corrosion advances\, and the surface records what occurs in real time. Time reads as a physical interface—irreversibility and emergence carried forward through touch\, weight\, and chemical change. \n\nClick here to register.\n\n \nSHANE CHARLES is a sculptor working across Maine\, Boston\, New York\, and internationally—engineering installations from Eastern Woodlands–sourced timber\, oxidized body-print on steel\, hand-cast metal\, and machined hardware—works in which contact is not image; pressure not metaphor; but consequence. Surface meets surface. Load to constraint. Breath into substrate. The body registers into steel as real transfer; and does not reverse. In this practice\, the body is material history; somatic memory is physical—experience as mortality witnessed. Architectural framing and performative activation operate as a single horizon system: condition with contact is form. Touch is the context in which the inert past faces potential—emergence carried forward by irreversibility.

We will hand stitch fabric to create improv quilt vases.  \n\nClick here to register.\n\n \nRACHEL GLORIA ADAMS is a multidisciplinary artist living in Portland\, ME. Adams has developed a vibrant\, graphic pattern-based visual language filled with references to the natural world and motherhood that possesses an heirloom quality. Her work takes form through quilting\, painting\, design and murals. She moved to Maine in 2005 to pursue her BFA from the Maine College of Art and Design. She has exhibited artwork at the Portland Museum of Art\, Space Gallery\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art and Dowling Walsh. Her work has been acquired by the Portland Museum of Art and the Farnsworth Museum. She has attended residencies at Speedwell and Pace House and is an Indigo Arts Alliance David C. Driscoll Fellow. In addition to her studio practice\, Adams has been commissioned to create murals for several institutions including the Children’s Museum of Portland\, the Farnsworth Museum\, and the Worcester Art Museum.

We welcome you to arrive at 5 pm to find your seats and enjoy the galleries; the presentation will begin at 5:30 pm.  \nCarl Sprinchorn’s Worlds: New York\, Sweden\, Maine: Carl Sprinchorn was always on the move. His travels took him to diverse locales across North American and Europe as he sought new experiences and new ways of artmaking. This lecture will look at how three of those “worlds”—New York\, Sweden\, Maine—shaped his art. Sprinchorn was not a mere tourist passing through these places but was grounded in their art and culture—in Robert Henri’s realism and the spectacle of the modern city; in Scandinavian painting\, naturism\, and mysticism; and in Maine and its regionalism. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to reserve your free tickets. \n  \n\n\n\n\nDonna M. Cassidy\, Professor Emerita\, University of Southern Maine\, has published widely on modernism and regionalism in early twentieth-century American art and culture\, most notably with her books Painting the Musical City: Jazz and Cultural Identity in American Art\, 1910-1940 (1997) and Marsden Hartley: Race\, Region\, and Nation (2005). She was also co-author with Elizabeth Finch and Randall R. Griffey of Marsden Hartley’s Maine (2017)\, the catalogue of the exhibition which she co-curated at Colby College Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most recently\, she has curated two exhibitions at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art—Shifting Sands: Beaches\, Bathers\, and Modern Maine Art (2023) and Carl Sprinchorn: “All the World Is a Painting” (2026). She is currently working on the forthcoming exhibition Layered Terrain: Art\, Land\, and Environment in Eastern Canada\, 1890-1940 at the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (2027-28).
